Society vs. Video Games Pt.III – The Mainstream Media

Before I get started, let me get this off my chest. The mainstream media (TV news and newspapers) can be looked at a reliable source. I always watch it to keep up with what’s going on in the world, but in the recent years, the media has shown how shallow they can be. As much as we should go into the political nonsense they have been spewing, I want to talk about the flame video games and even youtube creators have been getting (but primarily video games.)

The whole debacle with PewDiePie and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, JonTron and the recent debate with Youtuber Destiny, several news outlets have gone through the works to demonize these content creators. Saying things like them being anti-Semitic, white supremacists, Nazis, etc. Now if this were true, then we would obviously say something, but the news outlets did what I call, “going full Sarkeesian.” They cherry picked certain things out in their videos, taking things way out of context, and not fully watching or listening to the videos. (Why they are targeting YouTubers is whole other story.)

Why am I bringing this up? Because the same things that the media does with big Youtube names are the same things they do with video games. (this is what the blog is about after all.) Let’s go all the way back to April of 2014. A fifteen-year-old teenager ended up stabbing his Spanish teacher to death. The lightly touched upon the fact the boy suffered from loneliness, suicidal tendencies, and was the victim of constant bullying, too many times, they mentioned the boy was an avid fan of metal and plays video games and specifically mentioning games like Dark Souls and Grand Theft Auto (ah, the poor man’s crutch.) Even going as far as to mention that even was part of a gaming community called, Achievement Hunter and having various artworks of the grim reaper on his Facebook page.

How about the unfortunate Sandy Hook school shooting. The shooter, Adam Lanza was a gamer. He did have an addiction, but not to the violent games that were in his collection. It just so happened to be Dance Dance Revolution that was revealed in the final report be the State of Connecticut and if a rhythm-based game was the cause of the death of children and teachers, then there is seriously an issue.

The way mainstream media poison the mind of people who don’t understand the concept of entertainment is annoying. I personally know the word ‘poison’ shouldn’t be used to describe people’s ignorance of the problem, but I feel as if it is necessary to use as it perfectly shows that people are willing the demoralize things they can’t completely wrap their heads around. I don’t believe that we should automatically belittle those who easily give in to false information, but I also don’t believe we should allow people the spread false information as well. One thing that we need to remember is that we need to react back in a cool and collective manner, because if we respond with aggression and hostility, we’ll only be proving the accusers’ false points.

And the most important tool….USE ACCURATE INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!

I want to hear what everyone else has to say about this topic. What are your thoughts on the matter?
